  3. OATH AND AFFIRMATION
  4. At the beginning of a new Parliament, every member is 
  5. required to swear the oath. This reads 'I, (name), do 
  6. swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to 
  7. her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, 
  8. according to law, so help me God'. It is made at the 
  9. Table of the House, with the New or Old Testament 
  10. held aloft.

  12. The Despatch Box contains a range of Bibles designed to meet 
  13. most religious tastes: an Authorised New Testament, a Hebrew Old Testament for Jewish members, and Bibles in Welsh and Gaelic. Members may also 'make affirmation' of their loyalty rather than take a religious oath. The member then signs his or her name on a parchment and is introduced to the Speaker. Members who refuse to take the oath or ΓÇÿmake affirmationΓÇÖ are prevented from taking their seats.
